The Waste Man

A 25m high man, all made of wastes, that the people from Margate were very happy to provide. In fact a “modern man”, nothing else than consumption goods: planks of wood, tables, chairs, keyboards, paintings, dartboards, a front door, old rope, sofa padding, toilet seats etc. Conceived by the controversial British artist and sculptor, Antony Gormley, “the statue” was built in more than 4 weeks, left “alive” only one day and then set on fire at twilight, becoming a part of Penny Woorlcock’s film “Exodus” („a modern retelling of the biblical story of the Exodus exploring themes of identity, migration and great movements of people across the globe”, Domus no. 900). A hidden steel frame, dug into the ground, held it upright and the rubbish had been secured by a mass of steel cables to prevent blocks of wood falling onto the crowd. Its location, on the site of the defunct Dreamland amusement park shouldn’t be considered an accident, nor his hand waving (or is it reaching to the sky?) nor the window piercing his body…
