Sydney, a work of art on a building

This building could be Sydney’s biggest work of art. Starting from the famous photo of Max Dupain, “Bondi”, ARM designed a building that will have this image “engraved” on its 14 storey facade. From the inside, each balcony, which covers the north façade of the building, seems to be cut in a strange, unique pattern.

This is actually how the photo is recreated on the façade. The image only gets clearer at a distance or by squinting your eyes like you do when you want to see more clearly in bright sunshine. From the plaza in front of the building, the striations of the balconies can no longer be tied with the photo but they still create an interesting design. Placed on Sydney’s renowned Darling Harbor the building is intended as a commercial and residential space. The project of the Dupain Building won a competition in 2005 but I don’t think the construction was completed yet.
