Fouquet’s Barrière Hotel opened to the public in October 2006. Found in the heart of Paris, on Champs-Elysées, this hotel links two existing buildings, offering an interesting example of urban insertion. Why Édouard François chose to recreate a haussmanienne facade when he could have created anything else?

Well…here’s what he says: “They told me to design a new hotel facade. I did a replica, in grey concrete, of the monumental facade of the Fouquet hotel around the corner, a building of historical distinction. Also the windows are replicated in concrete. But at ground-floor level the replicated facade seems to have been cut away to make space for large display windows.” Édouard François is far from creating a pastiche; he only wants to start a dialog in which the horizontal windows are the key. They create screens that reflect the sky during daytime, or add a soft color to the gray facade, at night. We feel that underneath the concrete coat there’s a different logic. It’s a sophisticated look for what is, after all, a luxury hotel. François gave up his well known green facades and created a sober yet interesting facade, remaining as playful as always.
