Apartments in a former sewage plant
In creating these dwellings, de Arcitectengroep decided to choose the solution of restoration rather than creating a project that would only have some resemblance with the site’s original background.
It was initially planned to build 7 circular villas but the project evolved to juxtaposing the housing facilities with the site’s raw industrial elements already present, even if those were a bunch of slurry tanks. So, 3 former sewage tanks were refurbished: one kept its function of grey water tank, one was made into storage facilities for the adjacent dwellings and the third became a small apartment building. Of the last drum 30% was cut in order to bring natural light into the rooms. Each floor contains a three-room apartment and a small studio. On top, the penthouse, has a full 360 degree view on the Amsterdam West district and the near by lake. Denying the hard concrete walls below, up here the rooms open widely to the sky through a fully glazed wall. Only one remains private, the living room, located in the center of the penthouse. Here light is brought in trough a skylight. “Movement through the building and apartments constantly shifts from completely introverted (the drum itself and this living room) to extroverted (all other rooms, kitchen and terraces).”
