Always a distinctive presence, Zaha Hadid created a new interesting building, this time in Montpellier, France. Herault Culture Sport is a multifunctional construction resembling with the trunk of a tree, laid horizontally. Unified within a single envelope, the three institutions are still clearly defined as distinct functions. The archive is located at the base of the trunk, then comes the bibliotheque with a more porous design, while the sport department is located towards the end, where the trunk bifurcates, becoming lighter. There is also a big difference between the western face, where all the public entrances are located, and the eastern one, serving staff entrances. The large openness on the western side creates a powerful contrast with the hard concrete walls, all cut in shapes which defy the right angles. All of this creates an organic shape coming from each detail.
